Maratea è un comune italiano di 4 767 abitanti della provincia di Potenza, unico centro della Basilicata ad affacciarsi sul Mar Tirreno, attraverso il golfo di Policastro.
Il 10 dicembre 1990 il Presidente della Repubblica Italiana Francesco Cossiga ha insignito il comune con il titolo onorifico di "Città", titolo di cui comunque Maratea già si vantava in base a un decreto del 1531 firmato da Carlo V d'Asburgo.
