Il lago è stato creato a metà degli anni sessanta nella riserva naturale di Hardenberg, con una spiaggia che circonda la pozza. Al centro della pozza si trova un piccolo isolotto. Nel 2008/2009 è stato realizzato un sentiero pavimentato come pista da corsa, ma anche destinato a persone in sedia a rotelle. Nella riserva naturale intorno alla pozza ci sono molti percorsi per biciclette e passeggiate. Nei dintorni della pozza ricreativa si trovano numerosi campeggi, soprattutto intorno al borgo di Rheeze, rendendolo così anche un'attrazione turistica. Inoltre, la pozza viene utilizzata per il pattinaggio su ghiaccio durante i rigidi inverni e negli ultimi anni viene organizzato un tuffo di Capodanno quando non c'è ghiaccio sopra.
