Nel Lutterzand c'erano molte case estive. Queste erano particolarmente adatte per ospitare i rifugiati. L'ambiente boscoso e remoto rendeva difficile per i tedeschi rintracciare i rifugiati. Oltre ai numerosi rifugiati, anche i piloti che erano riusciti a lasciare in tempo il loro aereo colpito venivano temporaneamente sistemati in una delle case estive. Da qui venivano guidati attraverso le diverse linee per piloti verso la libertà, per poter partecipare di nuovo alle azioni di combattimento.
