Mértola è un comune nel distretto portoghese di Beja. Il comune ha una superficie totale di 1293 km² e conta 8712 abitanti nel 2001. Durante l'epoca romana il nome della città era Iulia Myrtilis. Musa ibn Nusayr conquistò Mértola nel 713. Dal 1033 al 1044, fino alla conquista di Siviglia, Mértola era una taifa indipendente. Il primo emiro fu Ibn Tayfur della dinastia Tayfuride, che durò fino alla sua fine nel 1044, quando la taifa passò a Siviglia. Nel 1091 Mértola passò nelle mani degli Almoravidi dal Marocco e nel 1151 agli Almohadi, anch'essi dal Marocco. Mértola cadde infine nel 1238 a Sancho II di Portogallo e fu donata ai cavalieri dell'Ordine di San Giacomo. La città rimase fino al 1316 la sede di quest'ordine.
