De Rupel is een korte, 12 km lange zijrivier van de Schelde die ter hoogte van Rumst ontstaat door de samenvloeiing van Nete en Dijle. De Rupel stroomt door de gemeenten Rumst, Willebroek, Boom, Bornem , Niel en Schelle, en mondt tegenover Rupelmonde op de grens tussen Hingene en Schelle van rechts in de Schelde uit. Hij is bevaarbaar voor schepen tot 2000 ton. De goederentrafiek bedroeg in 1992 8,8 miljoen ton.
