Het bruinbier heeft van Oudenaarde een beroemde bierstad gemaakt. Aan de overkant van de Schelde zie je de gebouwen van de befaamde brouwerij Liefmans liggen. Daar werd in 1770 de eerste 'bruine' getapt. Vandaag wordt er nog steeds gebrouwen volgens een 300 jaar oud recept. Het kriekbier begon hier pas veel later te schuimen. De brouwinstallatie, met kookketels, koelschepen en baudelotkoelers zijn nog steeds gemaakt van rood koper.
Vandaag maakt Liefmans deel uit van de Groep Duvel Moortgat.
