De ijzeren paal werd opgericht door het Belgisch leger in 1851. Deze paal was een referentiepunt voor exacte afstands-en hoogtemetingen. De paal is een geodetisch signaal dat deel uitmaakt van een geodetisch driehoeksnet. De twee andere geodetische basissen bevonden zich in Oostende en Hampiré.
Toen dit gebied nog een uitgestrekte heidevlakte was maakten de uitgestrekte vergezichten het mogelijk om precieze metingen uit te voeren naar kerktorens en andere bakens in de omgeving.
