Het kruisbeeld in blauwe steen werd beschadigd door de Franse troepen eind achttiende eeuw. Tijdens de Franse Revolutie waren alle christelijke symbolen immers taboe. Vanaf 1795 behoorde Oost-Belgie, net als de rest van België, tot de Franse Republiek. Weweler was deel van het departement van de Ourthe, dat Luik als hoofdstad had. Na twintig jaar Franse overheersing werd Oost-België tijdens het congres van Wenen in 1815 gevoegd bij het Pruisische keizerrijk.
