Na de dorpsverwoesting van 1489 bleef van de kerk alleen de 12de-eeuwse romaanse toren overeind. De overijsenaren verloren de moed niet en begonnen aan de wederopbouw van de kerk in gotische stijl. In 1692 ging tijdens een brand de kerk opnieuw in vlammen op, Ze werd opnieuw opgebouwd en in de 19de eeuw onderging ze een laatste neogotische restauratie. Onder het koor bevindt zich de grafkelder van de heren van Overijse uit de laatste tweehonderd jaar van het Ancien Régime ( 17de-18de eeuw).
