Met ‘Prins de Ligne’ wordt Karel van Arenberg (1515 -1616) bedoeld. Karel, zoon van Jean de Ligne en Margaretha vander Marck erfde de naam ‘Arenberg’ van zijn moeder, die in haar huwelijkscontract liet bepalen dat haar kinderen de uitgestorven naam Arenberg en het wapen van haar voorouders mochten dragen.
Oorspronkelijk was deze verbinding tussen de Naamsesteenweg en de Waversebaan niet meer dan een veldweg. Hij werd gekasseid en in 1905 omgedoopt tot Prins de Lignestraat bij de feestelijkheden van 75 jaar Belgische onafhankelijkheid.
