Dit indrukwekkende betonnen monument langs de E17 staat symbool voor de vele grensarbeiders van weleer. Die staken uit de Kortrijkse regio de grens over om in Noord-Frankrijk in de textielindustrie te gaan werken. Ze vertrokken bij het krieken van de dag, eerst te voet, dan met de fiets en nog later met de speciale bussen en treinen voor grensarbeiders.
De vier punten van de 35 meter hoge Sjouwer staan voor de vier windrichtingen. Het grootste punt wijst symbolisch richting Frankrijk.
Bij De Sjouwer staat nog een fictieve boom, een creatieve manier om antennes van het oog weg te trekken.
Je bereikt het monument via het naastliggende fietspad.
