Over Boulevard de la Gare schrijft Pascal Verbeken in zijn boek Grand Central Belge het volgende: "Mariembourg leefde van het station. Veel inwoners waren cheminot, spoorwerker. De Rue de la Gare (red. Boulevard de la Gard) telde rond de Tweede Wereldoorlog geen enkele privéwoning, alleen winkels die draaiden op de passage van het station. Vandaag is er geen enkele winkel overgebleven."
