Hier in Rupelmonde werd de beroemde cartograaf Gerard Mercator geboren. Het was ook hier dat hij de epiloog hoorde van zijn ruzies met de kerkelijke autoriteiten die hem van ketterij verdachten. Dus in 1533 moest hij Leuven verlaten om een onderzoek naar zijn persoonlijke overtuigingen te vermijden. Tien jaar later werd hij gearresteerd voor ketterij in Antwerpen en opgesloten in Rupelmonde, maar hij wist uit deze juridische puinhoop te ontsnappen.
