De jonge Hubert Malfait (1898-1971) krijgt als aspirant-kunstenaar van Emile Claus (die in Astene vaste klant was in het café van Malfaits vader) goede raad. Claus spoort Malfait aan om in de natuur te werken en Malfait toont hem zijn eerste schilderijtjes. Later zal Malfait zich ontwikkelen als expressionist. “De gendarmes” naderen vanuit het dorp het kruispunt met de steenweg tussen Gent en Kortrijk. Bijna visionair kijken ze over de weg richting het huidige “Malfaitplein”.
