Description by the author

Deze thematocht brengt je langs het oudste kanaal van Vlaanderen. Al van bij het prille ontstaan van de stad Gent op de monding van de Leie in de Schelde werd gezocht naar een snellere uitweg naar de zee. De Lieve is het eerste gegraven kanaal van Vlaanderen dat de fiere stad Gent een snelle vaarverbinding met de toenmalige Zwinmonding tot in Damme moest bezorgen. In Lovendegem, Waarschoot en Zomergem stroomt dit 'Liefken' als een pittoresk kanaaltje waar vissers en reigers heersen. Achter dit romantische landschap schuilt middeleeuwse economische geschiedenis, waarbij de tweestrijd tussen Gent en Brugge centraal staat.
