Soltau is een gemeente in de Duitse deelstaat Nedersaksen, gelegen in het Landkreis Heidekreisen ligt op een middelpunt van wegen richting Hamburg, Bremen en Celle. De stad ligt aan de Böhme rivier en verkreeg in 1388 stadsrechten, maar werd al in 937 in oorkonden genoemd en telt nu 21.178 inwoners. Naburige steden zijn onder andere Bad Fallingbostel, Bispingen en Bomlitz.
In de geschiedenis werd de stad bekend door de veldslag van 28 juni 1519, welke op de nabijgelegen Soltauer Heide geleverd werd tussen de legers van bisschop Jan van Hildesheim en de legers van hertog Hendrik VII van Brunswijk-Lüneburg.
