De kernstad van Petershagen, dus Petershagen zonder de omliggende, bijbehorende dorpen, ligt, op een paar huizen van de "Brückenkopf" na, direct ten westen van de Weser, aan de monding van de Ösper. Aan de overzijde, op de oostelijke oever ligt Petershagen-Lahde.
Tot 31 december 1972 was Petershagen een stad in het ambt Petershagen en zetel van de ambtsadministratie. Op 1 januari 1973 werd het samengevoegd met verschillende gemeenten tot de nieuwe, aanzienlijk grotere stad Petershagen.
