De Fuhne heeft geen bron, maar een door oppervlakte- en grondwater van een moerasgebied gevoede piekgebied. Van deze pseudobifurcatie ten oosten van Zehbig stroomt het westelijke deel naar de Saale, die het bereikt in de tot de stad Bernburg behorende plaats Dröbel. Het oostelijke deel mondt in Jeßnitz uit in het Spittelwasser, een zijrivier van de Mulde.
Mulde en Saale zijn directe zijrivieren van de Elbe. Tot in de jaren '90 werd het oostelijke deel van de Fuhne vanwege lozingen van industrieloozen als vervuild beschouwd.
