De Ernstbach ontspringt 500 m noordoostelijk van Hof Mappen in het Rheingauer Hinterlandswald op het grondgebied van de stad Eltville am Rhein in de nabijheid van het vroegere Rheingauer Gebück. Enkele meters onder de bron kruist hij de Gebücklijn en stroomt op zijn weg naar het westen door het gebied van Hof Mappen, dat niet meer tot de Rheingau behoort. Vervolgens komt hij het Hinterlandswald binnen, dat hij tot de monding niet meer verlaat. Daarbij beschrijft hij, afwijkend van zijn algemene westelijke richting, een brede bocht naar het noorden om de Ziemerskopf. Vervolgens neemt hij als belangrijkste zijrivier aan de Wickersheller Brug van links de Wickersheller Bach op.
