Het Klenderhof werd in 1932 gepland door de Berlijnse architect Otto Firle in opdracht van Charlotte Baldner, een dochter van de Joodse warenhuiseigenaar Leopold Lindemann, die zijn 17 warenhuizen aan de Karstadt-groep had verkocht. Het eerste ontwerp had Firle op de achterkant van een menukaart van het Kampener Kurhaus geschetst. De bouwheer gaf het complex cadeau aan haar man, de gerenommeerde cellist Max "Bimbo" Baldner, die met het Klingler-kwartet internationale bekendheid verwierf. Op 30 januari 1933, de dag van de machtsgreep door Hitler, was de ruwbouw klaar, in de herfst kwam de familie Baldner erin.
