Lake Stymphalia is een paradijs voor een ornitoloog, maar ook voor liefhebbers van mythologie, omdat dit het gebied was waar de Stymphalische vogels leefden. Dit waren mensenetende vogels met koperen vleugels en scherpe metalen veren die ze op hun slachtoffers konden lanceren, en het waren huisdieren van Ares, de god van de oorlog. Bovendien was hun mest zeer giftig. Het was een van de twaalf taken van Heracles om van de vogels af te komen. Van Athena en Hephaestus kreeg hij enorme bronzen klepels om de vogels bang te maken. Hij kon de vogels tijdens hun vlucht neerschieten.
