Het eiland Kefalonia gaf zijn naam aan een geologisch gebied, de zogenaamde transformatiebreukzone van Kefalonia. het is een van de meest seismisch actieve gebieden van de Middellandse Zee. De transformatiebreukzone van Kefalonia is NE-ZW-georiënteerd en loopt ongeveer 155 km langs de westkust van Kefalonia en de Levkas-eilanden. De belangrijkste aardbeving die ermee verband houdt, is de MW 7.4 1867-gebeurtenis die grote schade aanrichtte op de eilanden.
