De naam "Lemnos" zou afkomstig zijn van Homerus en "veld" betekenen. Lemnos voorzag het klassieke Athene en het Byzantijnse hof van graan. Ook nu nog wordt het grootste deel van het eiland bebouwd met graan zoals tarwe en gerst. De lokale pasta van deze granen, genaamd aftoudia en flomaria, is zeer beroemd. Maar probeer ook zeker het heerlijke brood van het eiland.
