De buskruitkamer heeft een typisch zadeldak ter beschermen. In zekere mate bood deze constructie bescherming tegen de inkomende kanonskogels. Het schuin dak had in de meeste gevallen het effect dat de kanonballen wegstuiterden van het dak en niet kondendoordringen in het gebouw wat een gigantische explosie tot gevolg zou hebben. En ook nog eens het verlies zou betekenen van een belangrijke grondstof in de oorlogsvoering: buskruit.
