De locatie van Minoa is uitstekend gekozen.

De heuveltop van 240 m geeft een uitstekend uitzicht op de noordelijke kust. Vijandige schepen konden snel gespot worden.
De beschutte baai van Katapola biedt een uitstekende aanlegplaats voor schepen.
De vallei van Katapola biedt een uitstekend landbouwgebied met dikke alluviale kleibodems en water
De omliggende leisteen heuvels werden (met veel arbeid) omgezet in vruchtbare terrassen waar graan op geteeld kon worden.

Opgravingen toonden aan dat Minoa bewoond was van de 11ste eeuw voor Christus tot de 4 de eeuw na Christus.

Waarom de nederzetting dan verlaten werd is onduidelijk.
