Tijdens het klassieke tijdperk stond Ermioni bekend om zijn scheepsbouwers en ook om de productie van porfyra of Tyrisch paars, een zeer belangrijke rode of paarse kleurstof. Het is een afscheiding die wordt geproduceerd door verschillende soorten roofzuchtige zeeslakken in de familie Muricidae , rotsslakken die oorspronkelijk bekend waren onder de naam 'Murex'. In de oudheid kostte het extraheren van deze kleurstof tienduizenden slakken en aanzienlijke arbeid, en als gevolg daarvan werd de kleurstof zeer gewaardeerd. Deze kleurstof werd gebruikt voor het kleuren van de uniformen van vele legers, waaronder die van Alexander de Grote .
