The "Guns of Navarone" is een klassieke film met in de hoofdrollen Gregory Peck, David Niven en Anthony Quinn. Het is gebaseerd op het boek van Alistair MacLean . Het verhaal gaat over de inspanningen van een geallieerde commando-eenheid om een schijnbaar onneembare Duitse vesting te vernietigen die geallieerde marineschepen in de Egeïsche Zee bedreigt. Volgens Nikolaos Suladakis is dit verhaal en deze plek gebaseerd op de batterij en observatiepost, gebouwd door de Duitse bezetter tijdens WO2, hier op het puntje van het Rodopou-schiereiland, bij kaap Spatha, op Kreta. Vanaf deze plek keek een geschutsopstelling uit over de Egeïsche Zee en controleerde de zeeroutes. Het hele gebied is nog steeds bezaaid met oorlogsartefacten, waaronder granaten van de kanonnen die zich op deze batterijpositie bevinden. De Griekse autoriteiten besloten de opkomende toeristenindustrie op het eiland Rhodos te promoten, en als zodanig werd de film op dat eiland opgenomen en niet hier op Kreta.
