Mersch is het (welvarende) centrum van het landbouwgebied in Luxemburg. De Mamer en de Eisch, twee riviertjes, stromen er in de Alzette. Dat dit een rijk gebied is maakt de densiteit van kastelen duidelijk: Mersch heeft er één uit de twaalfde eeuw. Ten zuidwesten van Mersch vind je er liefst zeven; men heeft het dan ook toepasselijk over de Vallei van de Zeven Burchten. Ten noorden van Mersch ligt Colmar-Berg, dat geheel beheerst wordt door het indrukwekkende slot van de groothertogen. In Pettingen ten noorden van Mersch staat een dertiende-eeuwse burcht. Bij het zuidelijker gelegen Schoenfels staat een kasteel met een zestiende-eeuwse donjon.
