Voor ongeveer 13.000 gulden werd in 1639 de schilder Rembrandt van Rijn eigenaar van een pand aan de Sint-Anthoniesbreestraat in Amsterdam. Het huis was gebouwd in 1606, in een nieuwe buurt, die zich later zou ontwikkelen tot de wijk waar de joodse Amsterdammers bij elkaar woonden: de Anthoniesbreestraat werd Jodenbreestraat. Maar financiële problemen dwongen de schilder jaren later het huis weer te verkopen.
