Al in de Romeinse tijd lag hier een nederzetting genaamd Caspingium, die lag aan de zuidelijke heerweg (weg t.b.v. het leger) tussen Noviomagus (Nijmegen) en Lugdunum Batavorum (Katwijk). In en rond Asperen zijn behoorlijk wat Romeinse vondsten gedaan.
Rond 1314 verkreeg Asperen stadsrechten.
Ten noorden van Asperen langs de Linge ligt het wiel het Galgenwiel. Een wiel is een diepe plas, die ontstaan is tijdens een dijkdoorbraak.
