Orvelte is één van de mooiste dorpen van Nederland. Orvelte is een eeuwenoud esdorp dat in de 10e eeuw is ontstaan. De monumentale boerderijen en de straten, met kinderkopjes en oude klinkers, geven het dorp een unieke sfeer.
Orvelte presenteert zichzelf als museumdorp vanwege de vele historische bezienswaardigheden in en rond het dorp. Naast de "normale" dagelijkse bedrijvigheid en woonfunctie van het dorp is een groot aantal boerderijen en andere gebouwen ingericht voor het publiek. Auto's zijn niet toegestaan in Orvelte, wel kan men een rondrit maken in een heuse paardentram.
In het dorp is, soms tegen betaling, te zien hoe men in vroeger tijden leefde en werkte.
