De ligging aan de uitmonding van de Oude IJssel in de Gelderse IJssel maakte Doesburg tot een belangrijke handelsstad. Doesburg is één van de zeven Hanzesteden aan de IJssel, centraal gelegen tussen Achterhoek, Liemers en Veluwe. De Hanze was een samenwerkingsverband van handelaren en steden die door samenwerking probeerden hun handel te beschermen en uit te breiden.
Na de 15e eeuw brokkelt de sterke positie van Doesburg af. De IJssel werd door verzanding minder goed bevaarbaar voor handel van en naar onder andere Doesburg.
Tijdens de Tachtigjarige Oorlog (1568-1648) verandert Doesburg van een handelsstad in een vestingstad met bijbehorende verdedigingswerken.
