Vanaf de Boerenschans controleerden de Staatse belegeraars het scheepvaartverkeer over de Bossche Sloot en beschermden zij de zuidelijk gelegen Hollandsche Dijk. De schans, herkenbaar als verhoging in het landschap, was een van de grootste van de negen linieschansen. Ze was ongeveer 575 meter lang en 340 meter breed. De Boerenschans ligt op het grondgebied van Vlijmen, in de gemeente Heusden. Binnen de legerplaatsen in de linie zouden de protestantse veldpredikers actief zijn geweest, zoals de Vlijmense oud-predikant en toenmalige Heusdense dominee Gisbertus Voetius. Vlijmen was toen het dichtstbijzijnde Hollandse dorp en Heusden de dichtstbijzijnde Hollandse stad. De logistiek belangrijke vesting Heusden werd gezien als “TLANTS STERCKTE”.
