De Burgemeester van Amsterdam kijkt vanuit zijn werkkamer uit op de Zwanenburgwal. Zowel de schilder Rembrandt woonde hier (op de hoek van de Jodenbreestraat) als schilder Salomon Meijer, en Karel Appel. Die had in zijn jeugd op nummer 42 een atelier, waar hij joodse jongens is de oorlog onderbracht.
De Zwanenburgwal lag midden in de jodenbuurt. Aan de hoek met de Amstel is het monument voor het Joods verzet te zien.
Andere opvallende zonen van deze wal zijn architect Michiel de Klerk en communistenleider Paul de Groot.
