Qua sfeer en historische allure komt deze oude hanze- en bisschopsstad naar de mening van onafhankelijke beoordelaars in Limburg op de tweede plaats na Maastricht. Op de gecombineerde punten van werken, wonen, winkelen en cultuur komen alleen deze beide Limburgse steden in de landelijke top-tien, zo oordeelt het opinieweekblad Elsevier van 9/11/06.
De stad heeft een historisch centrum met vele monumenten zoals:
- De kathedraal van Sint Christoffel, in 1410 werd begonnen met de bouw van deze kerk. De kerk is gebouwd in gotische stijl.
- Munsterkerk, een kruisbasiliek, gebouwd in de 13de eeuw en gerestaureerd door de beroemde architect Pierre Cuypers in de jaren 1864-1891. De kerk is gebouwd in de romaanse bouwstijl.
- De Rattentoren uit de 14de eeuw, een overblijfsel van de vroegere stadsversterking die in de 18de eeuw werd gesloopt.
- Hervormde kerk (1400) met vergrotingen uit de 15de eeuw en 16de eeuw.
