In 1856 werd het verboden in Amsterdam om je behoefte te doen op straat. Om te voorkomen dat de donkere steegjes en afgelegen plekjes nog meer tot toiletten werden verheven installeerde de stad 250 gietijzeren toiletten die je slechte op een aantal plaatsen kan zien zoals nabij het station, Amstelveld, de Prinsengracht en het Sarphatipark.
Deze gietijzeren urinoirs worden wegens hun vorm "krullen genoemd" en ook "secreten". Dat laatste woord is uitgegroeid als scheldwoord.
