Lünen er den største by i Kreis Unna i det vestlige Westfalen i forvaltningen Arnsberg. Lünen er en del af Landskabsforbundet Westfalen-Lippe samt Regionalforbundet Ruhr. Den tidligere kreisfrie by med ca. 88.000 indbyggere er i dag et mellemcenter, der er præget af sin beliggenhed i det nordøstlige Ruhrområde og ved den sydlige kant af Münsterland både af industriel og landlig indflydelse. Lünen var fra 1476 en såkaldt beistad i det middelalderlige Hanseforbund og er i dag medlem af det moderne Hanseforbund.
