Hulst profilerer sig som den "mest flamske by" i Zeeland. Især den burgundiske livsstil i byen Hulst tiltrækker mange belgiske turister. Hulst var formelt en del af Grevskabet Flandern sammen med resten af Zeeuws-Vlaanderen indtil 1648 (Freden i Münster) og var en datterby til Gent. Hulst er stolt af at blive nævnt i den middelalderlige Van den vos Reynaerde. Dette faktum bliver nævnt med en statue af Reintje. Hulst er medlem af den Hollandske Forening for Fæstningsbyer
