Bei den Römern war es Brauch, ihre Toten außerhalb der Stadtmauern zu bestatten. Die meisten Bürger wurden auf einem gemeinsamen Friedhof beerdigt, aber für herausragende Bürger wurden Grabhügel aufgeschüttet. Von diesen Grabhügeln, auch Tumuli genannt, wurden entlang der Via Belgica Dutzende errichtet, von denen sich drei auf dem heutigen Gebiet von Tongeren befinden; das Herstappeltombe und die Tumuli von Königsem an der Paardsweidestraat und der Römischen Kassei.
