Sint-Arnoldus van Tiegem wurde um 1040 geboren. Er wurde zunächst Ritter, trat aber nach dem Tod seines Vaters 1070 als Mönch in Soissons ein, wo er als Einsiedler lebte. Er wurde zweimal als Friedenswächter nach Flandern geschickt.
Ab dem 15. Jahrhundert wurden Reliquien nach Tiegem überführt, zunächst in die Pfarrkirche. Erst im 19. Jahrhundert verlagerte sich der Gottesdienst in den Holdenbroekbos, der schnell in Kapellebos umbenannt wurde. Es gab einen Brunnen und eine Kapelle. 1817 wurde die kleine St-Arnoud-Kapelle gebaut, die noch steht.
1860 wurde mit dem Bau der großen Kapelle und späteren Wallfahrtsstätte begonnen.
Sankt Arnold ist der Schutzpatron der Brauer.
