In mittelalterlichen Zeiten war die Stadt aufgrund des Salzhandels bemerkenswert reich. Es gab mehrere Salinen, die die Stadt umgaben. Das Salz wurde in die benachbarten Lehen exportiert. Entlang der Alten Salzstraße wurde es über Lauenburg nach Lübeck transportiert und von dort aus zu den gesamten Ostseeküsten verschifft.
