Der Piccadilly Circus ist der Mittelpunkt der Hauptstadt und einst der Nabel des Empire. Mitten im dichten Verkehr rund um den Platz verweilen viele Besucher gerne auf den Treppen des Eros-Brunnens. 1893 ließ Alfred Gilbert dieses Denkmal zu Ehren des Philanthropen Anthony Ashley Cooper, dem siebten Earl of Shaftesbury, errichten. Dieser Adelige hatte im 19. Jahrhundert die massive Armut mit seinem eigenen Kapital bekämpft, indem er Suppenküchen einrichtete und Schulen bauen ließ. Der geflügelte Engel mit Pfeil und Bogen oben auf dem Brunnen ist also eindeutig keine Darstellung des Gottes der Liebe, sondern eine Allegorie des toten Earl of Shaftesbury (shaft = Pfeil, bury = begraben).
