Die Basilika Santa Maria in Porto war eine wichtige Kirche in Ravenna, nicht weit von der Porta Nuova, an der Via Roma, der Hauptstraße von Norden nach Süden im historischen Stadtzentrum. Sie beherbergt die griechische Madonna.
In der ersten Hälfte des 15. Jahrhunderts beschlossen die regulären Kanoniker von Santa Maria in Porto, ein neues Kloster neben ihrer Kirche Santa Maria in Porto Fuori zu errichten, aber die Republik Venedig zwang sie stattdessen, es innerhalb der Stadtmauern zu bauen. Sie erwarben ein Grundstück an der Porta Nuova, im südlichen Teil der befestigten Stadt, und reihten die Häuser auf dem Grundstück am 5. August 1496 ab.
