Die Kirche und das Kloster der Franziskaner-Minoriten stammen aus dem Jahr 1364 .
Ab dem 17. Jahrhundert wurde das Kloster erweitert und renoviert . Aufgrund des Einsturzes des Kirchenschiffs wurde die Kirche 1927 für den Gottesdienst geschlossen und in den 1970er Jahren einer Reihe von Restaurierungsarbeiten unterzogen.
Das Kloster wurde als Krankenhaus genutzt und beherbergt heute den repräsentativen Sitz des Wissenschaftlichen Kulturzentrums Ettore Maiorana.
Die Kirche San Francesco ist auch als Kirche der Unbefleckten Empfängnis bekannt, da sie die Statue der Unbefleckten Madonna beherbergt, die jedes Jahr am 8. Dezember in einer Prozession getragen wird.
