Das Dorf entstand rund um die 1448 erbaute Schleuse in der Grecht, die das Woerdense Verlaat genannt wurde. Der Bebauung wuchs in zwei Regionen: Holland und Utrecht. Der holländische Teil, der westlich der Grecht und südlich der Kollenwetering liegt, fiel unter das Gericht Nieuwkoop.
Der utrechtische Teil nördlich der Kollenwetering und rund um die Meent gehörte zum Gericht Wilnis, während das südlich davon liegende Stück zum Gericht Kamerik gehörte. Nach 1813 wurden die Gerichte in Gemeinden umgewandelt und das Woerdense Verlaat blieb auf drei Gemeinden verteilt.
Erst am 1. Januar 1989 nach einer kommunalen Neugliederung wurde Woerdense Verlaat, zusammen mit einem unlogisch großen Stück von Kamerik, der Gemeinde Nieuwkoop hinzugefügt.
