Mierlo war ab 1100 ein Herrschaftsgebiet, in dem die Herren von Mierlo bereits Kirschen anbauten, so wie es die Römer zuvor getan hatten. Der humusreiche, durchlässige Sandboden in Mierlo ist dafür sehr geeignet. Der Pomologe Rietsema beschrieb 1928 die MIERLOSKI schwarze KIRSCHE als eine eigene Sorte. Von 1948 bis 1970 wurden hier in Mierlo Kirschernte-Feste mit einer jährlichen "Kirschenkönigin" gefeiert. Während dieser Feste zog das Dorf jährlich 60.000 Besucher an. In den letzten Jahren sind die örtliche IVN-Abteilung und die Gemeinde dabei, den Kirschbaum wieder ins Straßenbild zurückzubringen. Die alten, aber auch die neuen Obstplantagen sind während der Blüte eine Pracht zu sehen.
