Auf der Bahnlinie Maarssen-Utrecht führte der Wissenschaftler Christophe Buys Ballot am 3. Juni 1845 Experimente zum Dopplereffekt durch (der Effekt, dass hohe Töne tiefer klingen, wenn sie von einem vorbeifahrenden Fahrzeug ausgesendet werden). Er platzierte eine Anzahl von Hornbläsern im Zug, um einen konstanten Ton zu erzeugen. Beobachtungen entlang der Bahnlinie sollten hören, wie viel Tonunterschied es beim Vorbeirauschen gab. Doppler hatte berechnet, dass bei 70 km/h ein b eine halbe Tonhöhe höher klingen würde (wie ein c).
Das Experiment schlug fehl aufgrund des nicht konstant gehaltenen Tons, der variablen Geschwindigkeit des Zuges und des nicht guten Hörens durch den gesamten Zuglärm.
