In the 13th century, there was a castle here that served as a summer residence for the abbots of the Ghent Saint Bavo Abbey. Czech prince-bishop Ferdinand von Lobkowitz added stables, two orangery houses, and an expensive collection of exotic plants at the end of the 18th century. Charles Vuylsteke established the neoclassical castle as a horticulture business around 1870, thus kicking off the azalea and begonia cultivation in Lochristi. The castle and the park can only be visited in groups.
