Durante la Primera Guerra Mundial, la región alrededor de Kampenhout-Sas fue escenario de intensos combates entre el ejército invasor alemán y las fuerzas belgas en agosto de 1914. Los alemanes pudieron reagruparse cerca del sas, repararon el puente destruido y cruzaron el canal alrededor del 9 de septiembre de 1914 para retroceder a los belgas a través de Keerbergen, Putte hacia Lier. Todas las casas en los alrededores de Kampenhout-Sas fueron destruidas y la aldea de Relst fue borrada del mapa.
