A lo largo de los siglos, el área 'Gat van den Ham' ha estado sujeta a cambios por la naturaleza y el ser humano. El actual sistema de canales es un remanente de la desecación en el siglo XVI. Para mejorar la naturaleza, la agricultura, la retención de agua y la historia cultural, en los últimos años se han realizado varios cambios, como la creación de nueva naturaleza y áreas pantanosas alrededor de los canales. Además, se han incorporado parcelas de terreno agrícola junto al bosque.
